FAQ
What is community solar?
Community solar is a green energy option that brings the benefits of solar to renters, homeowners and other community members without the up-front costs of installing your own panels. Instead, solar panels are located at a nearby solar farm. You, your friends, your neighbors and local businesses can enroll with Onyx Renewables to receive solar credits on your utility bill and support renewable energy in your community!
How does the program work?
Enroll once, and your National Grid electricity account will be linked to Onyx Renewables’ community solar farm. It’s an easy way to save money on your electricity bills. Solar power goes from the solar farm to National Grid, where it helps power your community with planet-friendly renewable energy. As a subscriber, you get a piece of the clean energy incentives in the form of solar credits, which reduces the cost of your utility bill.
Do I need to own my home or apartment to participate?
Nope! Renters and homeowners alike have access to community solar savings — no solar panel installation necessary!
Do I keep my utility provider?
Yes! There is no change or disruption to your electricity service. National Grid will remain your utility provider and continue to send a monthly bill. The only difference is, as an Onyx Renewables customer, you’ll automatically receive solar credits on your National Grid bill.
Exact savings will vary depending on your energy usage each month.
Do I need to install solar panels?
No, you don’t! The solar panels are all located at a Massachusetts solar farm managed by Onyx Renewables – not on your roof.
Are there any sign-up fees?
It’s FREE to enroll, with no upfront costs. If you choose to cancel for any reason, or move out of the National Grid service area, there’s no fee to cancel.
Can I cancel if I change my mind?
Yes! If you wish to cancel for any reason, simply give 90 days notice and there are no cancellation fees. Please see your community solar agreement for additional terms and conditions.
How much can I save?
You will save 10% on the solar credits applied to your National Grid electricity costs. That can really add up month after month, year after year! Exact savings will vary by month based on your energy usage.
How do I see my savings?
Each month, customers will see their solar credits applied to their National Grid utility bill. Then, you’ll receive a separate bill from Onyx Renewables showing your dollar savings and 10% discount.
Where can I find my utility account number?
Your existing utility account number can be found on your National Grid utility bill or by signing into your utility account online.
Are you an electricity supplier (ESCO)?
No, we are a community solar developer, which is not the same as a third-party retail energy supplier. Instead, Onyx Renewables provides solar electricity to National Grid and you get a credit for the value of the solar electricity allocated to your utility account.
